Adelaide Arcade is a heritage shopping arcade in the centre of Adelaide, South Australia. It was first opened in December 1885 and hailed as the southern hemisphere’s most contemporary shopping precinct at the time. Today, it offers a unique retail experience where quality and personalised service is second nature. Adelaide Arcade is located in the heart of the city opposite the fountain in Rundle Mall. It occupies the site of two disastrous fires that destroyed George Debney’s fine furniture factory and showrooms and Patrick Gay’s warehouse in 1855 and 1884 respectively. A syndicate of prominent businessmen, including Emanuel Cohen, J. M. Wendt, Patrick Gay, Saul Solomon, and L. H. Berens, formed to erect a shopping arcade linking Rundle and Grenfell streets. Withall & Wells were selected as architects and W. Pett and Son as contractors.

The arcade was designed in the Victorian style with ornate ironwork, glass domes, marble floors and gas lighting. It originally held 50 stores and featured Australia’s first electric lift. It also had a Turkish bathhouse, a tea room, a photographer’s studio, a taxidermist, and a shooting gallery. The arcade was renovated and extended several times in the 20th century, adding more shops, offices and a museum. The arcade is owned by Adelaide Arcade Pty Ltd, a company that was formed in 1976 by the descendants of the original syndicate members.
