Federation Square, or Fed Square, is a venue for arts, culture and public events in the heart of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is located at the corner of Flinders and Swanston Streets, opposite the Flinders Street Station and near the Yarra River. It covers an area of 3.2 hectares and consists of several buildings, open spaces, plazas and artworks. Federation Square was opened in 2002 to commemorate the centenary of the federation of Australia in 1901. The site was previously a swampy area that was later used as a railway yard and a car park. The design of Federation Square was chosen through an international competition, which was won by a consortium of architects led by Donald Bates and Peter Davidson. The design features a distinctive geometric pattern of triangles, which creates a contrast with the surrounding historic buildings.
