Federation Square, or Fed Square, is a venue for arts, culture and public events in the heart of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is located at the corner of Flinders and Swanston Streets, opposite the Flinders Street Station and near the Yarra River. It covers an area of 3.2 hectares and consists of several buildings, open spaces, plazas and artworks. Federation Square was opened in 2002 to commemorate the centenary of the federation of Australia in 1901. The site was previously a swampy area that was later used as a railway yard and a car park.
